Thanksgiving Cards, Anyone?

You’re probably pretty familiar with greeting cards. During the holiday season they fill both our mailbox and our inbox. At Christmas they may be red, gold and green, and at Valentine’s Day they’re decked out in pink and red. We get them on birthdays, anniversaries and on special occasions like weddings and graduations. In fact, cards are such an integral part of our lives that the greeting card industry raked in a cool $7.5 billion last year.

What’s surprising is that although pretty much everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, most people don’t bother with Thanksgiving Day cards. In terms of card sales, Thanksgiving ranks far behind other holidays like Easter and Halloween.

Why not change all that? There are some great reasons why now might be the perfect time for a thoughtful Thanksgiving Day card.

As a small business, it’s a chance to stand out.

The closer we get to the end of the year, the more engrossed we are with the holidays. Would you rather send out a Thanksgiving card that gets noticed or a Christmas card that gets buried in an avalanche of other mail? There’s also the value of being first. Many people display their holiday cards as they receive them, and since Christmas cards are typically sent out later, it means your Thanksgiving card will get the mantle all to itself for a while.

Your Thanksgiving card will stand out in another important way as well. Take a good look at the Christmas cards you've both given and received over the years. One thing that will quickly become apparent is how alike many of them are. They invariably feature either a winter scene or an all-too-familiar collection of snowmen, reindeer or Christmas trees, with the occasional Santa Claus thrown in. By contrast, many Thanksgiving cards have a fall theme. You not only have different colors like orange, yellow and gold on your card, but you also have different images like turkeys, pilgrims and cornucopia baskets.

With a Thanksgiving card you also run less risk of missing the holiday your client celebrates.

Do you know the religious preferences of your recipient? Do they celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas? Or how about Kwanza? Should you just use a nice, safe ‘Happy Holidays’ or is a heartfelt ‘Merry Christmas’ the way to go? Thanksgiving is celebrated by pretty much everyone, so you can send your greeting without having to worry about these questions.
