What’s Your Summer Marketing Plan?

It’s finally warm outside! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining and the grass is actually green instead of the funky shade of brown it’s been for the past eight months. You can be forgiven if you’re a lot more excited about getting back out on the golf course or planning your garden than you are about your marketing plan. After all, half your staff is planning to be out on vacation, and summer is presumably the slow season for many businesses anyway. And really, the only holiday worth mentioning during the whole stretch is the 4th of July.

Right?

Actually, summer is a great time to kick your marketing in high gear. Here’s why:

Reduced competition. If your competitors want to have a quiet marketing summer, let them. Summer marketing means your message has less noise to fight through, and it’ll have more opportunity to stand out.

More receptive customers. Unless you’re a penguin, howling winter wind and subzero temperatures don’t tend to put you in the best frame of mind. You’re shivering and cranky and the last thing you want to do is spend any money you don’t have to. Enter summer. Bright sunshine and a warm breeze can help warm the coldest heart and importantly, the coldest wallet.

More venues to choose from. The Internet is a year-round phenomenon, of course, as are emails, direct mailers and text alerts. But why limit yourself? Summer offers an endless stream of festivals, concerts and other outdoor events that give you the perfect chance to take your marketing to where the people are, by sponsoring a local ball team or outdoor event. It’s the perfect chance to build up your local clientele and get some leads using different marketing techniques.

Plenty of occasions to go around. The 4th of July might be the granddaddy of summer holidays, but it’s not the only game in town. There are graduations, weddings and anniversaries for starters. There’s also Flag Day on June 14th, the Summer solstice on June 21st and even National Bikini Day on July 5th. And if all else fails, make your own holiday. After all, if Amazon can do it, then why not you?

Much like the colors that make it up, summer is a bold season. It’s your chance to make your marketing equally bold. Take a few chances. Be a little daring. How about a new promotion or new product line? Summer is a great time to take some new directions with your marketing. And if things don’t work out the way you planned, you’ll still have plenty of time to recover before the fall push starts.
