Halloween Marketing: Creepy Content and Frightful Fun

If the thought of what to do for your Halloween marketing this year has you yearning to hang a “Gone Trick-or-Treating” sign on the door the first day of October, then this post is for you!

Marketing for Halloween is a must, of course, if you're selling Halloween-related products.  Even if you’re not however, it's a great way to generate goodwill, keep your name in customers' minds, and kick off your other holiday sales. Besides, everyone needs a little Halloween fun!

Long before October 31st you should be posting some Halloween related content on your website and through social media.

In addition to promoting any specials you may be having, you’ll want to find ways to create excitement and anticipation. Tell your stories—scary stories, favorite Halloween memories from childhood—and invite readers to do the same in the comments. Helpful information is always appreciated. Halloween safety tips, recipes, ideas for homemade costumes, local ghost lore—give your customers something to read and talk about.

Remember, everything doesn't have to be about your business—demonstrate how to bake your special Halloween treats, or post pictures of your jack-o-lanterns. People are always looking for something new and special to do during the holidays, and they are likely to share your content with their friends.

  • Partner with the local haunted house, pumpkin patch, corn maze, etc., to be their official ticket sales location. Alternatively, you could buy a block of tickets and have giveaway contests, or give them away with purchases over a certain amount of money.
  • Host an event—a haunted house, a costume swap party, a costumed tea party, a pumpkin carving contest, a pumpkin smashing contest—on a day/night before October 31st. This is a good opportunity to make contact with your clients/customers/patients and show them a good time.
  • This would be a great time to introduce a frequent buyer program, which would encourage shoppers to come back on Black Friday.
  • Decorate. You can decorate scary, cute, or just go for orange and black, but be sure to dress up your store. If at all possible, create a great backdrop for photos, and invite customers to drop by in costume to pose for some pictures.
  • Create Halloween versions of your products. Making pumpkin-flavored or -scented alternatives of your candles, coffees, etc., or special manicures in orange and black are good ideas. If it's not possible to change the product, change the name: add Full Moon Fudge or Spellbinding Spuds to your menu, for example.
  • Have a midnight sale for special customers to get rid of your inventory.
  • Host a food drive. If you're having an event, a can of food could be the entry fee.

There's no reason to be scared of Halloween marketing. Use some of these ideas to springboard your marketing plan and have the most “terrorific” season ever.
